shouldn't you know this if you've been playing for 8 years?

I play trumpet too. I've only been playing for 5 years, but I highly recomend you get a Bach Stradivarius Trumpet. Its a professional, silver, trumpet. If your going to buy the best brand get a Bach or a Van Cleave. Do not buy a Yamaha!

How did you survive playing school horns for eight years?  It killed me everytime I had to play one, if mine was in the shop, or I forgot it. I would recommend some brands, but I've only dabbled in brass, my second newest instrument, I've only played it for three years now, is Baritone/euphonium. Your music teacher should be able to recommend some brands that would be really good for your needs, if you ask him/her

My suggestion would be to go along to a specialist music shop and ask them what they would recommend for your standard and budget.

I hate Bach. Yamaha Xeno is good but so many people have them. You could always go with a Martin if you're really serious about playing because that'll set you back. If you're really good and you are majoring in music it might behoove you to buy a Taylor Custom. I play a custom LA Benge. It'll be very hard to find a horn that will give you a good bright sound for jazz AND a dark tone for concert venues. Don't go by what anyone says though. You have to go out there and play all these horns and pick the one that fits you best. I know pros who play Getzens. I would also recommend Kanstul.
