As you may have noticed, the current sticky on disability does not have many entries. So here is your challenge: write an entry on a disability of your choice to go into a new LW Guide to Disability. Your entry can be on ANY disability. It does NOT matter if more than one entry is submitted for the same subject. Your entry should consist of the main facts about the disability, for example: how it is caused, who it affects, what it consists of, any different forms it can take... In general, include as much information as you can about the disability - the person reading it may know nothing about it at all. There is no word limit, but bear in mind that short and concise can be better than long and wordy. No plagiarism please. Small amounts of quoting can be contained in your entry (with a link to the source of the quote), but the majority must be your own work. You can enter this contest as many times as you like. The entries will be judged on the quality and accuracy of the information contained, and how well it educates people. There will be points for the three best entries (a winner and two runners-up). Judges: myself (Arguia), Blank black Deadline: 1st July (provisional date. May be subject to change) All entries received that are of a good quality will be combined into a new guide to disability. If more than one entry on the same disability is received, the entries will be combined to form one entry in the final guide. Every author will receive credit for their work. A message from Blank black: Points will be awarded for the best entry and the two runners up, again judged by arguia and myself. Post edited at 12:17 am on May 22, 2008 by Blank black

It's a really good idea. I shall edit this later on once I've finalised my entry. Cystic Fibrosis What is it? Cystic Fibrosis, commonly referred to as CF, is a genetically inherited disease that affects the mucus linings in the wind pipe as well as the liver, pancreas and intestines. This principally means that they suffer from breathing problems as the mucus is too thick and can limit the amount of air that goes into their lungs. Who is affected? As CF is a hereditary disease, it can only be acquired through genes. So if your parents or if any of their parents or siblings have the gene or suffer from the disease, then you might be at risk. Both males and females are affected by CF. Prevalance - ~ 1 in 3000 live births in the Caucasian population of North America and northern Europe
- First symptoms and signs typically appear in childhood.
- Eighteen percent of patients present within the first 24 hours of life.
- Around 7% of patients in the U.S. are diagnosed as adults.
- More than 38% of patients are now adults (due to improvements in therapy).
- Thirteen percent are past the age of 30.
What causes it and how is it diagnosed? There is a specific channel in the cells that regulate the water flow to the mucus layer in cells that line the airways. This is called the CFTR channel, and in patients with CF this channel is either missing completely or it doesn't work. This means that water is continuously removed from the mucus, causing to be very thick and sticky. This is what causes the problems associated with CF. Principally CF is diagnosed using genetic screening and genetic testing. This can be done after birth by testing any DNA, such as a cheek swab or the blood. It can also be done before birth by testing foetal cells (through amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling). This is very helpful as it allows doctors to be prepared when the baby arrives and also allows the parents to be ready emotionally. Symptoms and effects on a CF patient As said above, it creates breathing problems. At first it might start off with a hard coughs, or shortness of breath, but this can quickly develop. The sticky mucus causes breathing problems because it means that the dust and bacteria that collect in the wind pipe and the air sacs are harder to cough up and remove. This can also make them more susceptible to infections (and thus reduce the effectiveness of the immune system. As well as breathing problems it causes digestion problems too. CF patients have problems maintaing a constant body mass because of problems with the digestion and absorption of nutrients. They generally have poor appetites but have to eat more than the normal person to make sure they obtain the correct energy and nutritional intake. There are also reproductive problems, as male CF patients commonly lack the sperm duct on one or both sides through which sperm leave the penis. This means they may not be able to conceive a baby with his partner. In women a mucus plug may develop in the cervix. How can it be treated? Sadly there is no cure for CF. There are however plenty of treatments that can help extend the quality of life and the length of their life. Physiotherapy can help a lot with rhythmical tapping on the back that can help dislodge mucus and improve the flow of air. This needs to be carried out a few times daily. There are plenty of medications that can help relieve a lot of the symptoms of CF. This includes antibiotics that help prevent the growth of bacteria in the lungs, nebulisers blowing a moist drug into the lungs to relieve the tightness of the chest. Steroids can also be used to help reduce the inflammation of the lungs. Heart and lung transplants are also possible if the lungs become very badly damaged and inefficient and the current treatments are not improving the condition. EDIT: Removed some grammatical and spelling errors. Post edited at 7:55 am on May 29, 2008 by marshmellowman

My entry on Asperger's Syndrome: 1. Classification: Asperger's Syndrome is one of several autism spectrum disorders. Children with AS usually are characterized by their abnormalities of social interaction and communication that interfere with the individual's functioning level. Like most other mental conditions, AS begins in infancy or childhood. Autism is very similar to Asperger's and some believe that is what causes AS, although its diagnosis requires impaired communication and allows delays in cognitive development. Higher-functioning autism means the diagnosis is autism without any mental retardation. 2. Characteristics of AS: Many children with Asperger's are socially impaired and have stereotyped and restricted patterns of activities and interests. These children often have intense preoccupation with a narrow subject and have motor clumsiness. a. Social Interaction: A lack of demonstrated empathy is possibly a cause of AS. Individuals with Asperger's experience difficulties with basic social interaction. They often have a failure to make friends, enjoy spontaneous interests or achievements with others and have impaired nonverbal behaviors (such as eye contact, posture, and facial expression). Children with AS often go up to new people to meet them, unlike those with autism. They may also engage in a long conversation about a favorite subject without paying attention to the other person's thoughts about the subject (such as boredom). This is how they are insensitive to others. b. Restricted and repetitive interests & behaviors: Individuals with Asperger's often display repetitive behaviors and interests that can be abnormally focused or intense. Many of them prefer sticking to routines or schedules and preoccupy themselves with parts of objects. Stereotyped and repetitive behaviors are a part of AS. They can be hand or body movements such as flapping or twisting. c. Speech & Language: Most children with Asperger's do not have a significant delay in speech, however they may not know how to use certain words or put them in the correct order. Their speech may be abnormally loud or fast. Some individuals with AS have a sophisticated vocabulary at a young age, although they have difficulty understanding figurative language. 2. Causes: One cause of autism and related disorders is birth defects such as pesticides or maternal antibodies. Some believe that a lack of vitamin D can cause autism although there is no proof that this is true. 3. Treatment: There is no real cure of autism or related disorders. However, with medication and therapies, the individual can learn easier. Training of social skills done by a professional can also help if it is at the individual's level. Although no medication for AS exists, medicines for ADHD or depression can also help.

Is this myspace or a help forum? I work for a children's disability service and I couldn't write a better entry than the one I posted (although I did edit it).
